Oakland to Force Small-Time Marijuana Growers Out of Business

Rebecca Kaplan and Larry Reid of the Oakland City Council are working up a proposal that would strip jobs from hundreds of small-time marijuana cultivators and severely limit patients’ choice of medical marijuana.

The new ordinance would dramatically limit cultivating marijuana to only four large indoor mega-marijuana growing facilities, completely eliminating small scale, mom and pop operations. All the local dispensaries would be forced to buy their cannabis from these mega-farms. Oakland already limits indoor residential medical marijuana growing to 72 plants for individuals and 6 mature plants plus 12 immature ones per patient for dispensaries. The new ordinance would ruin the livelihood of small-scale independent patient-farmers who collectively supply Oakland’s dispensaries with high-quality, distinctive medical weed. These master gardeners would lose their means of supporting their families and patients would suffer a huge loss of choice. Local marijuana growers are the backbone of our community and we must protect them.

We feel the proposed ordinance will create a monopoly on the growing of medical marijuana. It will also limit competition and selection of medicine and put many growers out of work. We urge council-members to reject any ordinance that would force dispensaries to ignore small-time cultivators.
