10. Ricky Williams

Stoner_atheletes_Ricky WilliamsFootball (1995-2011)
Accolades: 1998 Heisman Trophy, 2002 1st team All Pro, 2002 Pro Bowl MVP, 10,000 Rushing Yards Club member

No other athlete has got as much coverage and created as much controversy for their love of marijuana than Ricky Williams (#102 on the PERIODIC TABLE OF STUFF STONERS LIKE). Ricky’s love for weed led to his first retirement in August of 2004. This decision came as Williams had already reportedly failed three drug tests and was facing a one-year ban from the NFL. While away from the league, he studied holistic medicine at the California College of Ayurveda that fall in Grass Valley, CA and openly used marijuana saying it was a form of psychotherapy treatment for his social anxiety disorder. By July 2005 after having agreed to serve a four-game suspension and give back part of his signing bonus he was playing in the NFL again. But by February 2006, the league said Williams had once again violated its drug policy and he was suspended for the entire season. Ricky kept his skills up by playing in the CFL in 2006 and by May of 2007 he was back in the NFL again. He’s now retired and probably back to smoking weed again.

9. Warren Sapp

Accolades: 7x Pro Bowler, 4x 1st team All Pro, 1999 Defensive Player of the Year, Super Bowl XXXVII champion
At the 1995 Draft combine Warren Sapp tested positive for marijuana and cocaine, but later it was revealed that he didn’t test positive for cocaine and the league wouldn’t comment on the reported positive marijuana test. A couple years after the draft combine bullshit, the ex-Oakland Raider was pulled over and police found 12.7 grams of marijuana in his car. Turns out the weed belonging to one of Sapp’s friends and the judge cleared him of any wrongdoing.

8. Dock Ellis

Accolades: 1971 All-Star team, 1971 World Series champion, 1976 A.L. Comeback Player of the Year, No-Hitter thrown on 6/12/1970

Famous for pitching a no-hitter on LSD, Dock Ellis was a regular marijuana user during his playing days. Now-a-days the Dock serves as a drug counselor to youth living in poverty. As Ellis recounts the famous game:

I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria. I was zeroed in on the [catcher’s] glove, but I didn’t hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times.

The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn’t. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. I started having a crazy idea in the fourth inning that Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire, and once I thought I  was pitching a baseball to Jimi Hendrix, who to me was holding a guitar and swinging it over the plate.

7. Ross Rebagliati

Accolades: 1998 Olympic Gold Medalist
Canadian snowboarder Ross Rebagliati was stripped of his gold medal after THC showed up on his drug test at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. But a short time later, he was given back his medal with the reasoning that marijuana was not on the list of banned substances.

6. Tim Lincecum

San Francisco Giants v Texas Rangers, Game 5Baseball (2004-present)
Accolades: 2x NL Cy Young Award winner, 2010 World Series Champion, 4x All-Star
Tim Lincecum (#101 on the PERIODIC TABLE OF STUFF STONERS LIKE) looks like that stoner kid from Dazed and Confused. He talks like a stoner, has a stoner nickname (“The Freak”) and judging by the misdemeanor pot charge he picked up in November 2009 he probably is a stoner. Plus he’s pretty fuckin’ good at throwing a baseball—in his first four full seasons in the majors, Lincecum’s logged more than 200 innings each year, and led the National League in strikeouts three times.

5. Bill Walton

Accolades: 2x NCAA Champion (1972-1973), 2x NBA Champion (1977, 1986), 1978 MVP, Named one of the 50 greatest NBA players of all time
Take one look at Bill Walton rockin’ the Deadhead gear and tell us he’s not a stoner—despite the fact he’s never been busted or documented using marijuana.

4. Arnold Schwarzenegger

Accolades: 1968 Mr. Universe, 7x Mr. Olympia (1970-1975, 1980)
Aside from getting stoned in his younger days, Schwarzenegger has been one of the biggest influences on the marijuana movement in history. In 2011 while serving as California governor, he reduced the charge of possession of one ounce or less of marijuana to an infraction rather than a misdemeanor. Meaning people caught with less than a zip would only face a fine of $100 and would not have the offense appear on their criminal record.

3. Randy Moss

Accolades: 1998 Offensive Rookie of the Year, 7x Pro Bowler, Record for most TDs in a season (23), Fifth on the All-Time TD list (154) and All-Time Receiving Yards list (14,858)
Randy Moss was one of the most entertaining athletes of his era, arguably one of the best wide receivers of all time, and a total stoner who boasted about his love for the weed. While playing for the Oakland Raiders in 2005, Moss told HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel that he “had been smoking since he entered the league.” At that point, Moss he had been in the league for 7 years.

2. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Accolades: 6x NBA MVP, 6x NBA Champion, 19x NBA All-Star, NBA All-Time Scoring Leader (38,387 points)
Kareem is another pot-smoking athlete who, let’s be frank, looks like a stoner. Not the disheveled, dirty hippie stoner, but the distinguished professorial stoner who smokes to alleviate the nausea from his migraine headaches (this is actually why Abdul-Jabbar says he smokes). The NBA’s all-time leading scorer

The all time leading points leader in the NBA and one of the top 3 players of all time is a proud medical marijuana patient in California. Kareem has told many that he smokes weed to alleviate the nausea from his migraine headaches. During his playing career he was arrested twice on pot charges.

1. Michael Phelps

Stoner_atheletes_michael phelps_marijuanaSwimming (2002-present)
Accolades: 22 Olympic medals including 18 gold
The most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 total medals, (18 of them gold) also delivered the most famous bong hit in sports history. After winning a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, a photo of him using a bong at a University of South Carolina house party was released by the British tabloid News of the World in January 2009. As a result, Phelps received a three-month suspension from USA Swimming and Kellogg’s said they would not renew their endorsement of the Olympian. Of course USA Swimming and sponsors hopped back on Michael Phelps’ train prior to the 2012 Olympics in London. Phelps has since gotten two DUI’s and recently entered a rehabilitation facility.
