What’s The Best Soil For Growing Weed?

Question: I’m learning how to grow weed. I would like to know what’s the best soil for cannabis. A nursery nearby has this organic potting soil mix which contains 3 main ingredients. These are: Peat moss, manure, and shredded topsoil. What do you think of ready to go “organic soil”? Should I maybe buy a bag of loam with it and mix it. What mixes do you guys suggest? I don’t want to be adding like bone meal and stuff like that, just simple mixes with like loam, sand, manure, top soil, peat moss, etc. To be honest I know next to nothing about growing mediums so just clue me in on the best soil for weed.

NOTE: Here’s a recipe for quite possibly the greatest marijuana growing soil of all time. It was created by the legendary Subcool, the guy behind strains like Vortex, Chernobyl and an array of other award winning genetics. Here’s Subcool’s Super Soil Recipe which originally appeared in High Times mag.

Jay Kitchen and Uncle Tweezy: For not wanting to add a lot of additives it sounds like you’re wanting to add a lot of additives, but it’s all good. You might want to see if this is the only soil your nursery has. Maybe they have FoxFarm Ocean Forest or Roots Organics—both of these are good soil for weed.

It sounds like this could be your first grow or one of your first grows. So if you get the bag of Fox Farm Ocean Forrest or any other organic soil mix, even the one you’re talking about from your nursery, you’ll be good. You can grow good pot in not-so-good dirt. But at the end of the day, the better the soil, the better your plants are going to be. If you are a beginner just buy a bag of the soil at your nursery, the Fox Farm or Roots, or whatever and run your plants—see what happens. Don’t make it overly complicated, certainly at the beginning. You don’t want to get really discouraged about growing because it’s not going to go the way you think it should go. And you’re going to have high expectations. Keep it simple and just flow with it. As you go with it the plant will grow you as you grow the plant.

What do you think is the best soil for growing weed? Have you ever made subcool super soil or any other super soil? I hear you talk about the FoxFarm, but their product is not living soil or compost. I prefer a compost with living soil. I switched to BuffaLoam for the past 3 years, growing pure organic product. The industry in Colorado is promoting a natural product, but 99% of all dispensaries grow with chemical fertilizers.

I started out reading everything on this subject a few years ago & had what I thought was good success until I was allowed to walk into an amazing garden. I had been blending peat heavily with perlite and an organic potting soil that seemed heavy to me and it was working as I say but I had clearly over thought the process. Today I use coco coir/sand/perlite/coco husk with about 20% composted manure and feed with hydro nutrients at 25%. I just like the way this blend feels in my hands when its finished and the plants anchor to it real well. Here in central AL this does great outdoors potted as well as indoors however, I haven’t been able to keep the clay from leaching in if I put this mix straight into the ground.

Newbie in Germany and I scored six seeds that have just germinated. I have them in a mini Root It greenhouse. When do I change them into their first pot? I’ve been reading a lot about using coco husk/sand/perlite/coco coir to aerate: how does that work exactly? Do I mix it in the soil or layer the bottom of the pot with these materials? Also is there any specific plant soil that could be comparable, like tomato soil, rose soil regular garden or gardenia soil as we have different offers at the local nursery?
