Sublime with Rome is a stoney collaboration between Sublime’s bassist Eric Wilson and singer, guitarist Rome Ramirez. They cover a ton of Sublime songs. At one point the band also included Bud Gaugh, Sublime’s drummer. The three began working together in 2009. Back then they just went by the name Sublime. That ended when Bradely Nowell’s estate issued a legal challenge to the use of the trademarked name for a venture not including Nowell—Sublime’s singer who passed away from an 1996 drug overdose in San Francisco. As a result, they changed their name to “Sublime with Rome” in January 2010. And have been filling that void left by Nowell’s unfortunate demise.
Like the original lineup this incarnation fuses punk, ska and reggae music, hails from Long Beach, California and has a penchant for pot. So we were stoked to land the opportunity to chat with Rome Ramirez about weed, the band’s latest studio effort, Sirens, and tour. It went a little something like this:
Why do you think SWR is so synonymous with weed or why does SWR’s music go so well with weed?
ROME: I think the band has a strong connection with the scene because of the overall sound of genres blending. Also the band has a long history of writing and covering songs about cannabis.
You guys recently went into the studio. Who are you working with in the studio and are there plans to put out new music soon?
ROME: For this specific album we plan on doing everything live all in the room with very few overdubs. So far its been just us in the studio and we might keep it like that for this album.
If you had to play someone three songs off SIRENS which would you pick and why?
ROME: Sirens: the beat is so damn fun to groove to. Been losing sleep : I like the adventure the songs put you through with lyrics and melody . Skankin : Its just fast paced and lots of energy plus we all love the band, Fishbone.
What can fans expect from your tour this summer with Dirty Heads? Will you be playing any new songs?
ROME: We will playing some new material that we have been working on and DH and SWR have songs ft each other so it will be fun to come up and play those songs with each other live.
Who smokes the most weed in SWR?
Do you guys travel with weed or do you pick it up along the way?
ROME: Never (laughing) fly with drugs.
What role does marijuana play in the band?
ROME: Weed delivers a great flow throughout the day and lightens up the mood.
What’s your favorite way to consume cannabis?
ROME: I think my fav way is a bong load and then a dab.
ROME: Orange dynamite strain I’m creating is going to be fuego. Currently though I’m on the Gorilla Glue #4.
