What Are The CBD Benefits Everyone Talks About?

CBDThe ABC of CBD Benefits

CBD or cannabidiol is one of more than 60 compounds found in a marijuana plant or hemp that belong to a class of molecules called cannabinoids. The other well known cannabinoid? THC. However when it comes to CBD vs THC only one gets you high, THC, the other works to counter the effect.

Funny thing is that for years breeders combined various marijuana strains to create the most mind-blowing weed possible—strains dripping with THC like Blue Dream, Chem Dawg, Green Crack and OG Kush. However because high CBD strains won’t get you stoned they’ll deliver all the benefits without any of the euphoria or intoxication associated with smoking weed. Because of this CBD-rich strains have particular appeal to older users and medical marijuana patients looking for relief without the high.

CBD Benefits

CBD has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory,  and anti-depressant qualities. Because CBD is non-psychoactive or less psychoactive than THC-dominant strains of marijuana (less than .03%) it’s great for people seeking relief from psychosis, seizures, spasms, inflammation, pain, anxiety  and other conditions without feeling stoned. According to review published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology back in 2013 studies have shown that CBD can:

Reduce nausea and vomiting

  • Suppress seizure activity
  • Combat psychosis disorders
  • Combat inflammatory disorders
  • Combat tumor and cancer cells
  • Combat neurodegenerative disorders
  • Combat anxiety and depression disorders
cbd what is it
CBD, like THC, occurs in abundance in marijuana and hemp plants

Most of these claims are dergived from studies on animals. That’s because marijuana projibition has made research using marijuana plants and hemp difficult if not illegal to perform. But a pharmaceutical version of CBD has changed all that. A company called GW Pharmaceuticals in the UK  has been funding clinical trials on CBD. They’re looking at CBD as a treatment for schizophrenia and epilepsy. A team of California researchers at the California Pacific Medical Center started trials applying CBD benefits to breast cancer.
CBD has been shown to help decreasing anxiety. CBD is also proven in helping a number of inflammation-related problems, including arthritis and other inflammatory ailments as well as multiple sclerosis.

CBD is also proven to inhibit the growth of the MRSA bacterium (a strain of staphylococcus resistant to antibiotics), which causes several difficult-to-treat infections. It has also show signs of helping with multiple sclerosis, spasms, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, nausea, convulsions and many other conditions, including cancer. In fact Rick Simpson used his Rick Simpson oil to cure his metastatic skin cancer in 2003. Since that time he’s been vocal about cannabis medicine. Simpson has successfully treated over 5,000 patients free of charge with conditions including cancer, AIDS, arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, Leukemia, Crohn’s disease and depression

Simpson also claims that his CBD oil will help with many other maladies including osteoporosis, psoriasis, insomnia, glaucoma, asthma, burns, migraines, regulation of body weight, chronic pain and mutated cells like polyps, warts and tumors. But you have to eat it—you can’t roll a joint with it or drop it in your vape pen—and you have to eat it continually to be effective.

A survey by Stanford researchers of 19 severely epileptic children found that 84% experienced substantial seizure reductions from CBD-enriched cannabis. Additional, preclinical studies suggest that CBD may have therapeutic benefits in the treatment of various conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, nausea, rheumatoid arthritis, schizophrenia, diabetes, PTSD, alcoholism, strokes and cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other ailments. CBD has been shown to suppress colon cancer tumors in mice and to kill breast cancer cells.

CBD Benefits Blow Up

CBD entered the mainstream when Dr. Sanjay Gupta reported on medical marijuana for CNN. Previously a skeptic on medical marijuana, Dr. Gupta admitted to having been “brainwashed” by government propaganda. Gupta featured the story of a 5-year-old girl, Charlotte Figi, who suffered continual epileptic seizures from a rare disease known as Dravet’s syndrome. Conventional treatment having failed, Charlotte’s condition dramatically improved after she was treated orally with an extract of CBD-rich cannabis.

In the wake of Gupta’s show, providers of high-CBD strains have been besieged by requests from parents of children with Dravet’s, including from non-medical marijuana states. Utah recently held hearings at the state legislature about drafting a bill on the topic.

Until recently, CBD-rich marijuana was generally unavailable in the U.S. because breeders had concentrated on developing plants with high THC, breeding out CBD in the process. Fewer than 5% of samples tested show appreciable amounts of CBD. Only with the advent of laboratory testing, first pioneered by Harborside Health Center and Steep Hill Labs in Oakland, did it become possible to detect and breed high-CBD varieties of cannabis, since CBD is otherwise undetectable by appearance or odor.

“Ultimately, there will be greater demand for CBD-rich cannabis, than there is for cannabis that just gets you high,” says Steve DeAngelo of the Harborside Health Center. “Only a small percentage of people enjoy the psycho activity of cannabis, but almost everybody can benefit from its medical properties.”

I have a medical marijuana card and I have tried several types of marijuana but I personally don’t like the high. I would much rather take my pills to deal with my chronic pain because I don’t like the high I get from marijuana. If there where a type of marijuana that I could use and NOT get HIGH.. WHERE DO I SIGN UP !!!

I stopped smoking weed because for some reason i feel like ima gonna die when i smoke it and i have been smoking for 5 years.. Although i love the taste i absolutely hate the high. If this weed that doesnt get u high is real they should make it legal for all with no medical card needed. Fuck all the other strains tell them to take the thc out of sour deisel 🙂

I personally love everything about weed highs, it feels like you are Alice in wonderland when I smoke, I see everything differently, the buildings get taller, streets are wider, music is amazing, food is to die for, and if you sit back relax and close your eyes you have visuals and see everything can imagine. And while you relax your body begins slowly to feel like your levitating, with a warm soothing comforting feeling.
I would smoke pot then do any drug. Once you can learn how to teach yourself not to be paranoid when you smoke you too will fall in love with Mary Jane 😉

I suffer from osteoarthritis and have had one hip replace and ready for my other to be done soon. My doctor has had me on hydrocodone for almost three years to manage the pain.I have been very nervous about the length of time I have been taking pain med’s and the trouble I will have getting off of them. I started looking at medical marijuana a few years ago but I hate the feeling of being high. My girl friend is a smoker and I tried some a few weeks ago while having a major muscle spasm in my back. It was amazing how fast it worked and how well it worked, although the spasm lasted for over a week Every time I would take a couple of hits It would cut the pain in half and would improve my range of motion far better the hydrocodone does. At last someone is doing some legitimate research into the medical marijuana.

mr. DeAngelo rocks. helps show that cannabis isn’t to just “party” with, (although parties with trees are awesome)but to help heal without the raciness or maybe even the grogginess associated with some strains. it definatly helps erase the stigma of mmj or mj in general and its users, pts., etc. not everyone wants their heart pounding agrravating their anxiety, and some rich strains nowadays seems like it can daywreck. a person with a heart condition who needs relief without taking an hour to finally leave the house to go to work can benifit from this imo……damn i need to try dat harlequin.

an interesting thing is to ponder if hemp itself has cbd still in its genes that can be bred into future wonder-flowers. its cool to think not only can we make some strong herb, but highly therapeudic ones as well.
