Can you eat weed without cooking it and get high? Yes. Of course, you can eat weed and still get high, dude. But you’ll probably also get a stomach ache. That’s because raw weed is covered in sticky trichomes and spiky hairs that’ll irritate your stomach. Plus eating weed is a huge waste—most of the psychoactive THC will just pass through your body if you eat weed raw. You spent your hard-earned cash on some good weed, right? it’s cool if you want to make some weed butter or marijuana brownies. Because eating weed is awesome. The high is totally different than when you smoke weed. But why not be efficient when you eat your weed? And that means one thing; decarboxylation.

What is decarboxylation

What is decarboxylation? Decarboxylation is the process of adding heat to cannabis allowing the contained non-psychoactive THCA or to transform into the high-inducing THC. Decarboxylation will occur as the marijuana dries as well—this is why it’s some important to properly dry and cure your homegrown weed. So basically if you want to release the full potential of your marijuana’s psychoactive effects, you must first go through the process called decarboxylation. Don’t worry, dude. Decarboxylation is as simple as smoking weed, using your vape pen or just turning on the over and baking some weed bits. Decarboxylation occurs as a result of all these processes.

Decarboxylation 101

The main reason that eating raw marijuana is such a waste of weed is because it’s full of THCA or Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid. THCA is not the psychoactive stuff that gets you high. That cannabinoid is called THC. As weed dries or is heated the THCA slowly converts to THC. So what is decarboxylation? It’s the process of applying heat to expedite the conversion of THCA to THC. This process happens when weed is smoked, vaporized in a vape pen or even heated in the oven. So decarboxylation is the simplest way to get it into things like cannabutter or edibles like marijuana brownies or even a marijuana tincture, says our bud cannabis culinary expert Elise McDonough of High Times magazine.

“The easiest way to add cannabis to your diet is to simmer it with your chosen fat, most commonly butter, and then strain it away and use that butter or oil as directed in recipes,” McDonough tells us in our exclusive interview. She also mentions that you can can sprinkle decarboxylated kief right on top of already cooked food.

How to decarboxylate weed

To decarboxylate weed grab a weed grinder or a coffee grinder and get your herb to a fine powder consistency. Preheat your oven to 310 degrees. Then simply spread the weed out on a baking sheet or in a pie plate. Cover it really well with foil by crimping it along the edge of the plate. Next place it in the oven and bake it for 10 to 18 minutes. Use less time for older drier marijuana and more for fresher weed. Once you are done with the decarboxylation remove the weed and let it cool before you open the foil so all the weed vapors can reabsorb back into the weed.

Decarboxylation Instructions:
Grind the cannabis—a course grind will allow the weed to evenly dry without losing potency.

  • Flowers
Like we said above preheat your oven to 310 degrees. Sprinkle your cannabis in a pie plate and then cover it well with silver foil by crimping the foil along the edge of the plate. Place in the oven and bake 10 – 18 minutes – less time for older drier material, more for fresher material. Remove plate and let it cool down slowly without removing cover to allow any vapors to reabsorb into cannabis.
  • Keif/Hash
Preheat the to oven 310 degrees and sprinkle hash/keif on pie plate, cover with silver foil and crimp foil along edge of plate. Place sealed dish in oven for 5 – 10 minutes. Remove plate and let it cool down slowly without removing cover to allow any vapors to reabsorb into cannabis.
  • Boiling Bag method
Place the cannabis flower/keif/hash into a boilable cooking pouch. Seal it. Place in boiling water for 50 – 60 minutes for flowers, 30 – 40 minutes for kief/hash—make sure water does not boil dry. Take bag out of water. Let it slowly cool before opening.
  • Cannabis Oil
Place heat proof container of cannabis oil into a cooking oil bath (canola oil works well). Heat cooking oil to 121C/250F.
Stir cannabis oil to break up bubbles. Remove cannabis oil from heat when bubble formation starts to slow down — or leave on heat until all bubbles stop for increased sedative effect.

If you’ve done an extraction with Ethanol, boiled off the carrier solvent (Ethanol) and then decaboxalyate the oil, there may be residual Ethanol in the extract, and you can taste it. There’s a method for purging ethanol from extract with a hotplate stirrer and it seems to work. take a look at this article: http://www.catscientific.com/purge-ethanol-cannabis-oil-using-cat-mcs78-hotplate-stirrer/
