Hawaii Begins Medical Marijuana SalesHawaii legalized medical marijuana in 2000. They finally completed their first legal sale this week—August 8, 2017. The first dispensary to make an official legal sale on the islands goes to Maui Grown Therapies. The licensed retail center is located at 44 Paa Street in Kahului very near the Kahului airport. The dispensary logo is By Maui, Of Maui, For Maui. According to their website they bring quality-assured, Maui Grown cannabis to the community.
“Maui Grown Therapies is a green company in more ways than one,” reads their site. “Its Upcountry production center is powered by a solar microgrid featuring a full array of photovoltaic panels and lithium ion battery storage banks capable of storing 1 MW of electricity. MGT also reuses its irrigation water by recapturing and filtering atmospheric condensate in its climate control system.”
MGT is easing into their operations with a short soft opening week. Patients who have gone through pre-opening intake can purchase by appointment only. On Monday August 14 regular operating hours (Mon-Sat, 10 am to 7 pm) and walk-in business will begin. Get in line early if you want to tap MGT for some herb.
“This is a great step forward and a historic moment for the state of Hawaii,” says a spokesperson for Pono Life Sciences on Maui who are set to open soon. “We are honored to be part of Hawaii’s effort towards expanding safe access to medical cannabis for patients. We are looking forward to getting our products to patients in the very near future.”
Pono Life Sciences began cultivating in February. Its retail operation is in the former Hawaiian Island Surf & Sport store in Kahului.

Limited access for nowThere are eight licensed medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the chain of islands. Only one is open for business so far. Set to open are three on Oahu; Aloha Green, Manoa Botanicals and Cure Oahu. There are two in Hawaii County: Hawaiian Ethos and Lau Ola and two on Maui—Maui Grown Therapies and Pono Life Sciences; and one on Kauai, Green Aloha.
These dispensaries are all at different stages of development, varying stages of the approval process and will open soon—hopefully. Registered patients and caregivers can purchase up to 4 ounces during a period of 15 consecutive days and a maximum of 8 ounces over a 30-day period. Dried flowers medicine for all dispensaries is tested for pesticides and other contaminants on Oahu by Steep Hill labs. Currently no oils, tinctures or edibles are allowed for sale.
