Jeff Sessions: Buzz Kill Or Soon To Be Road Kill?
Will Jeff Sessions last long enough to kill the marijuana legalization buzz? He and his judicial team say they’re poised to derail the momentum of the marijuana movement. That is if he keeps his job long enough. Fortune is reporting, “The Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety is expected to issue a report next week that advocates believe will link cannabis use to violent crime, and will call for tougher sentences for growers, sellers and users.”
It’s no secret how Sessions and his current employer feel about the legalization of marijuana. In a letter recently written to the members of Congress in May Session revealed his hand, and it wasn’t pretty. He specifically urged Congress to eliminate the Rohrabacher-Bluemenaeur amendment. The Rohrabacher-Bluemenaeur amendment basically prohibits the feds from interfering with the state-sanctioned medical cannabis activities. It is the Trojan of all protection for the states with long-running medical marijuana systems and Session wants it erased.
Pretty fucking scary right? Don’t fret too much. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra stated, “I would love to see Jeff Sessions come to California and tell us we’re not going to move forward on cannabis,” Becerra said, challenging President Trump’s attorney general in a wide-ranging Politico interview. “Something tells me that’s not gonna happen. I’ll be the 1 millionth person in line to fight Jeff Sessions on that.”
In addition, Jeff Session’s position as the AG may just be like smoke in the wind. Media is blowing up with reports about his possible removal. Chicago Tribune reported today, “President Donald Trump and his advisers are privately discussing the possibility of replacing Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and some confidants are floating prospects who could take his place were he to resign or be fired, according to people familiar with the talks.”
The Los Angeles Times is leading with “Troubles deepen for Atty. Gen Jeff Sessions as White House spokesman questions the ‘future of the relationship’”. And the Washington Post reported Cruz and Giuliani were two names that came up in conversations. The Post stated, “Among the names being floated as possible Sessions replacements are Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.” Neither has stated on record they are interested in the position.
CNN got Giuliani on record saying Sessions, “made the right decision under the rules of the Justice Department” to recuse himself. He did not return CNN’s message seeking comment on possible AG appointment.
Cruz stated in a statement released on Monday, he was “deeply gratified that we have a principled conservative like Jeff Sessions serving as Attorney General. The stories being reported in the media tonight are false. My focus is and will remain on fighting every day to defend 28 million Texans in the U.S. Senate.”
