how many grams in an ounceMarijuana Weight: Grams, Quarters and Ounces Explained

Marijuana and math seem like they don’t go together. But they do, dude. Math and marijuana meet when it comes to buying weed and measuring it out. There are grams, eighths, quarters, ounces and the list keeps going. But you don’t need a fucking advanced math degree to figure all this shit out, dude. Once you get the hang of it marijuana weight conversions are actually pretty simple. All you need is a calculator, a scale and this article. You’re welcome.

PRO TIP—If you need to weigh your marijuana we recommend Digital Pocket Scale on Amazon for under ten bucks.

Grams

Grams are the little dudes of the weed-buying world. Grams are typically the smallest amount of weed that you would buy. Some people may sell you less. And those people are probably trying to rip you off. However we have seen half grams for sale at dispensaries. However the gram or what was once called a dime bag is pretty standard measurement for someone looking to score just a small amount of weed. With a gram you should be able to roll yourself a decent joint. Maybe even a skinny blunt.

How many grams are in an ounce?

You thought the question how many grams in an ounce was going to be easy, didn’t you. If you say there are 28 grams to an ounce, you’re wrong. An ounce actually weighs 28.349523125 grams. It doesn’t matter if you’re weighing weed, water melons or weather vanes when it comes down to it—an ounce of weed isn’t 28 grams. It’s more. In fact it’s .349 grams more.

What exactly is a gram? This is where shit gets complicated, man. Why you gotta interrupt our flow with all these technical questions? Since you asked, a gram is “the absolute weight of a volume of pure water equal to the cube of the hundredth part of a metre, and at the temperature of melting ice.” Whatever the fuck that means!?!? Anyhow most importantly you’ll be able to spot a gram pretty quickly overtime after you get used to handling weed.

Speaking of handling weed. Always use a scale, dude. Pick up a cheap digital scale to weigh your weed because there’s no need to cheat anybody. Especially yourself. Also people with bad tempers.

Eighths

An eighth = 3.5 grams.

Quick! How many grams are in an eighth? You got it. There are 3.5 grams to an eighth of weed. More than triple the size of a gram of weed, an eighth refers to 1/8 of an ounce. Eighths are a good amount of weed for stoners who smoke somewhat regularly or just like to buy weed often. Yes you can find half-eighths, which should really be called a sixteenth, but these are rare—might as well just grab a couple grams instead.
Like with cases of beer you’ll mostly like get a better price on your weed if you buy an eighth instead of a gram. Actually you’ll probably find price cuts at each of the intervals discussed here. Some stoners are enterprising, man.

Quarter

A quarter = 2 eighths = 7 grams

A quarter is 1/4 of an ounce. A quarter is a great amount for most stoners. Buying a quarter will make your weed jar happy and will keep you from having to re-up for a bit. Most of the time you can spot a quarter right away. It’ll typically fill up the bottom quarter of a sandwich baggy.

Half

A half = 2 quarters = 4 eighths = 14 grams

A half refers to 1/2 of an ounce. Easy peasy, right? This marijuana math shit isn’t that difficult. Well, weighing out weed isn’t. Wait until you try converting all the liquid measurements when you start growing the stuff? Shit…at least you won’t have worry about weights…unless you decide to sell some of your crop.

Ounce

How many grams in an ounce? An ounce = 4 quarters = 8 eighths = 28 grams

An ounce is often referred to as zip or an O. If you consider yourself a stoner and an ounce of weed is something you should have on hand at all times. Nothing feels better than scoring an ounce of weed. Except well maybe scoring a pound.

Pound

A pound of weed = 16 ounces = 64 quarters = 128 eighths = 448 grams

A pound of weed is reserved for players, macs and True G’s. If you’ve got a pound of weed at your disposal you either grow or rock the mic. Either way that’s fuckin’ dope. We for those with a pound we salute you. And ask you to send some to us.

Oh yeah…you can also buy half-pounds and quarter pounds of weed too. You know what they call a quarter-pound of weed in France? We don’t either. We don’t use the metric system or eat Le Big Macs and shit.

Kilo

Okay fine, dude. If you insist on using the metric system like they typically do in movies like Scarface then you best familiarize yourself with shit like kilos, or kilograms. A kilogram = 1000 grams

Anyhow, man. When it comes to weed weights, don’t trust your eyes dude. Because different buds have different densities none of ‘em weigh the same. Get a scale. You can buy a scale online for cheap. That way you won’t get ripped off or get your assed kicked. And you can always use it for weighing out ingredients when making the best fucking pot brownies in the world.

Hi there 🙂 I’m perplexed. 🙂 Could you please help me? I bought a bag of 6 grams, 2 of 3 grams and a 1 gram. On the 6 gram the seller’s scale and my scale differed by 2 grams. His says 6, mine says 4.1. Off by a gram on the 3 gram bags but the 1 gram was a .9. Here’s the thing: 2 other scales agreed with mine. I’m in my sixties and use this for neuropathic pain. One guy took a 100 gram weight and both his and my scale agreed. He did push a button that the scale very briefly read 154? there bouts anyway. I don’t work and can barely afford what I buy and do go into debt; I really can’t afford to be ripped off. This is a dispensary with a few shady people that have charged me 2 bucks a gram over in the past but I let that go. I’m not sure to approach the owner or not and don’t want to risk losing buying privileges and wish to approach him honestly and ethically. It’s not his honesty I’m putting into question but more perhaps the employee. How can 3 scales say the same but I’m short? Thank you so very much for your response; it is appreciated. 🙂

A $1 bill weighs a gram 1.0. So the scale should say 1.0 when you put a dollar bill on it. You can check the scales like that. People should be honest.

His scale sounds like its calibration is off. Try casually asking the owner how often the scales are calibrated and then segue that into your concern over the scales not matching yours. Hopefully, it will fix the issue and allow you a way to give vital feedback (I’d be pissed if I was being shorted) without upsetting the owner.

I feel like I get ripped off every time I buy from the only weed guy I have. he’s an arrogant prick and refuses to weigh it out in front of me
