Pre 98 Bubba Kush Strain Review

Aside from getting it tested at a lab, which I don’t have enough left to do, how does one really know what the genetics are? The simple answer? Who cares. If it’s good weed that smells nice, looks pretty and gets you high, then who cares? If cannabis is your passion and you’re into genotypes and phenotypes and all that fun stuff, then you care.

Here’s what I found. This was posted by a user on the THC Farmer forums that says they know Katsu, who got a cut from someone who had an original. According to Internet forum lore, that’s where the Katsu Cut comes from.

Posts also say the Pre 98 cut is the best, followed by the Katsu cut. The rest of the other phenotypes were created to increase yield and speed. The green, purple, mint, etc.—all decent—but nothing in comparison to the real Bubba Kush. Apparently the real Pre 98 Bubba is a slow grower, and the yield leaves something to be desired if you are looking for quantity. The posts also say that the original is some of the best cannabis you can smoke. Katsu says:

“Seriously, though, I’ve read so many f***ing threads on purple, mint, pre2001 – let me tell you this: The Bubba Kush I bought is hands down the best weed I’ve ever smoked. Period. If you grow organic, feed her some bat guano in flower, let her go 9-10 weeks with a good flush, and give her a 2 week cure, it’s absolutely unbelievable.

I gave this cut to no less than 50 people with the requirement that they hand it out to at least 5 of their friends with similar conditions. The idea was to get this herb out there.

That being said, I’m smoked at least 6-7 different samples of Bubba over the years from friends, cups, etc., and it was never as good as when I grew it (I just followed GreenCrackMan’s instructions). I think most people tend to take her early because she looks ready at 7 weeks. I also think the organics and bat guano make a big difference in the flavor, because I didn’t like the taste nearly as much when I went hydro.

Enjoy the shit out of that herb. I know I did. By the way, not sure what my problem is but I tried every OG cut (other than the Abusive one, which I’ll grow out this summer) and Bubba was a harder hitting stonier weed in every instance. Maybe it’s just me, but Bubba’s the bomb.

As a sidenote, my buddy Weedzilla’s gone through just about every elite and puts the GCM Bubba cut at the top of the list, too.”

I also came across this article on High Times about the birth of Bubba Kush from 2013. They interviewed Bubba. The most amusing part about the whole thing is the comments. When did weed-smokers turn into a bunch of haters?
Appearance: Dark frosty leaves with small trichomes completely covering the bud. Tight dense nugs with light brown hairs, though they could be dark orange, but it’s hard to tell with how frosty they are.
Smell: Earthy, pungent kush smell. I went in specifically looking for this Pre 98 Bubba Kush, and didn’t even think to look at the date. This one was harvested back in December of 2014. More rotation would be nice, but then again some people prefer their herb aged long and slow, like wine. Apparently 1998 was a great year.
Flavor: Earthy and sweet with the slightest coffee undertones and an attractive, sweet aftertaste. The smoke was full and almost creamy, quite gentle on the throat when taking fat bong rips.

High: Relaxing yet heady. I can see the Pre 98 Bubba giving you a serious case of couch lock if you let it. But stay focused and do something creative and watch the flow muse take over.
Buzz Length: A couple hours for sure, but it always depends on your activity, metabolism, body fat, and a bunch of other variables. I found the buzz to be nice for the length it lasted.
Overall: On this particular package, I noticed on the back it said, “The use of Azamax and Dyna Neem Oil were used on this product during the growing season.” I’ve never seen that on a package of recreational marijuana I’ve purchased and reviewed, so I’m not sure if this was a preventative measure, or if they had some sort of a bug infestation. I didn’t see any mites anything weird on the buds. I’ll contact the farm and if they get back to me I will be sure to leave it in the comments.
