Oakland to Force Small-Time Marijuana Growers Out of Business

Rebecca Kaplan and Larry Reid of the Oakland City Council are working up a proposal that would strip jobs from hundreds of small-time marijuana cultivators and severely limit patients’ choice of medical marijuana.

The new ordinance would dramatically limit cultivating marijuana to only four large indoor mega-marijuana growing facilities, completely eliminating small scale, mom and pop operations. All the local dispensaries would be forced to buy their cannabis from these mega-farms. Oakland already limits indoor residential medical marijuana growing to 72 plants for individuals and 6 mature plants plus 12 immature ones per patient for dispensaries. The new ordinance would ruin the livelihood of small-scale independent patient-farmers who collectively supply Oakland’s dispensaries with high-quality, distinctive medical weed. These master gardeners would lose their means of supporting their families and patients would suffer a huge loss of choice. Local marijuana growers are the backbone of our community and we must protect them.

If you’d like to get involved please email the below council members with a unique email written in opposition to the upcoming ordinances. You can base your shit off ours…

We feel the proposed ordinance will create a monopoly on the growing of medical marijuana. It will also limit competition and selection of medicine and put many growers out of work. We urge council-members to reject any ordinance that would force dispensaries to ignore small-time cultivators.

I think that once marijuana is legalized, large corporations and companies are going to take over its production. http://stonerdiary.wordpress.com. Hey, I was looking through your blog and really liked it, so I put a link to it on my links page. Any chance I could get you to link back? Thanks.

Hi, my name i s Howard. I’m writing to express my oppositon to the proposed medical cannabis cultivation ordinance. The ordinance will create a monopoly on the farming of medical cannabis. It would put hundreds of farmers out of work, and ruin the variety and selection of medicine available at dispensaries. I would like the council members Jean Quan, Larry Reid, Pat Kernighan, and Nancy Nadel to reject any medical cannabis cultivation ordinance that does not allow dispensaries to purchase medicine from small time farmers
