“Judaism prioritizes health and encourages the use of medicine designed to improve one’s health or reduce pain,” said Orthodox Union Kosher CEO Rabbi Menachem Genack, in Vireo’s announcement. “Using medical cannabis products recommended by a physician should not be regarded as a chet, a sinful act, but rather as a mitzvah, an imperative, a commandment.”
Vireo was reportedly awarded the OU’s certification following a process by which its growth and processing of marijuana plants was monitored.
According to the OU, the certification will enable Vireo to successfully market to patients in the Jewish population of New York. The statewide practice of selling medical marijuana is set to begin next month, with dispensaries opening across the state. Vireo is already set to operate four dispensaries.
