“As has been well-documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol.”
Let us remind you all that cigarettes, which are completely legal, kill 340,000 to 450,000 Americans a year. And alcohol, which is perfectly legal in this country too, kills more than 150,000 Americans a year and this doesn’t include any alcohol related murders or traffic deaths. Marijuana deaths each year? Uhm, zero. Never have been. So obviously marijuana is safer than both “bad habits” Obama mentioned.
About the overt racism inherent in America’s war on drugs, Obama went on to say: “Middle-class kids don’t get locked up for smoking pot and poor kids do. And African-American kids and Latino kids are more likely to be poor, and less likely to have the resources and the support to avoid unduly harsh penalties.”
Over the past few years marijuana laws have transformed rapidly and stoners are now just gaining back the rights the federal government stripped from them more than 80 years ago. In November 2012 voters in Colorado and Washington state legalized marijuana for recreational use. And on New Year’s day Colorado began selling that recreational marijuana to adults 21 and up. Colorado made more than a million bucks that day, and continue to earn that much daily. Currently medical marijuana is legal in 20 states. As marijuana laws transform Obama points out that lawmakers shouldn’t be hypocritical and jail pot smokers when they probably experimented with cannabis themselves, like he did. We should not “have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished.”
