Smoking WEED Eryday Will Not Harm Your Lungs-20 Yr Study Finds

So this big ass government study has revealed two pretty fuckin’ cool facts, one we already knew, smoking WEED eryday, even over many years, does not impair lung function. And, another fact we didn’t know; lifetime exposure to marijuana joints is expressed in “joint-years” with one joint-year of exposure equivalent to smoking 365 joints or filled pipe bowls. Joint-Years! That’s fuckin’ awesome.

The study was published in the January 11, 2012 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). It reaffirms that smoking pot “does not affect pulmonary function and may actually increase lung airflow rates and lung capacity”. Duh, anyone who’s ever seen that Michael Phelps bong hit pic knows that.

The study also pointed out another well documented fact; tobacco smoke had exactly the effect shown in all previous studies; “increasing a person’s cumulative exposure to cigarettes results in loss of airflow and lung volumes; the opposite was true for marijuana smoke.”

And get this: “Those increases were not large, but they were statistically significant,” Kertesz added. “And the data showed that even up to moderately high-use levels—one joint a day for seven years—there is no evidence of decreased air-flow rates or lung volumes.”

Why did we know SMOKING WEED ERYDAY actually increases lung function? Because we reported on Dr. Tashkin’s findings hella days ago, man. So Tashkin, this pulmonologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who has studied marijuana for over 30 years (how many joint-years would that be?…fuckin’ math) wasn’t involved in this study…but did tell the NY Times “this report confirmed findings from several other studies showing “that essentially there is no significant relationship between marijuana exposure and impairment in lung function.” He said one reason marijuana smoke may not be as harmful as tobacco smoke may be the fact that its active ingredient, THC, has anti-inflammatory effects.“We don’t know for sure,” he said, “but a very reasonable possibility is that THC may actually interfere with the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.” Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease aka COPD is the co-occurrence of chronic bronchitis and emphysema, a pair of commonly co-existing diseases of the lungs in which the airways become narrowed.

Get ready for the kicker; Dr. Tashkin said he and his colleagues had unexpectedly found in their research that even SMOKING up to THREE JOINTS A DAY did not appear to cause a decrease in lung function. “I think that the bottom line is that there does not appear to be any negative impact on lung function of marijuana smoking,” he said, “and that therefore marijuana is not a risk factor for the development of COPD.
