What the Hell is SCROG Anyhow?

Q: Hello this is my first grow. I have 3 OG-13 plants and I’m in week 2 of the flowering stage and I recently noticed some buds forming near the bottom of the plant on branches that are covered from optimal light by Fan leaves. Right now I’m not using any type of Scrog as I’m not sure exactly what it is and what the purpose is. Also I tried to move a fan leave and it snapped off, is that bad?

And, I recently came across some interesting objects called polymer crystals. They absorb water and release over a 3 month period. I was thinking about using this as a medium with nutrients in the water. Have you ever heard of this or tried it?  Let me know.

Mel Thomas: Try to leave as many fan leaves on the plant as you can, these leaves are little sugar factories for our favorite plant and they provide all of the energy she needs to produce top quality buds. If the leaves yellow or start to die back then by all means remove them, however, if they are green and healthy you should leave them on.

SCROG is short for ‘screen of green’ and basically involves training your flowering plants horizontally under your lighting system. It is a great way to grow if you have a small closet type grow space but I prefer to grow my babies upright and I look to harvest around two ounces per plant, you will yield far more growing them this way, but you run the risk of being caught with more plants should you be busted!
Polymer crystals wont improve your yield but are useful for keeping your organic medium hydrated, I have used them before and they do work. I would personally only use them for organics, I am not a great fan of hydroponics and can’t quite see how they would benefit a hydro setup.
