After the extraction process, the crude extract undergoes a light purging process without a vacuum to remove most of the residual butane solvent. Time is the essential ingredient for forming crystalline structures. A separation process naturally leads to the formation of diamonds and liquid terpene sauce. Processors store their cannabinoid diamonds in a cool, dry, and dark environment to kickstart the diamond formation process.

The terpene sauce separates from the cannabinoid crystals during this process. The duration can vary, depending on environmental conditions and concentration, and may take several weeks. In some cases, processors might use other solvents, like pentane, to expedite crystalline formation, although it’s not essential.

Once the cannabinoids have separated from the liquid terpenes, the pure THCA crystals go through a final purge to eliminate any remaining solvent. Cannabinoids and terpenes are purged separately, allowing for an extended purge for cannabinoids due to their higher boiling point compared to heat-sensitive terpenes.
