Can You Overdose on Marijuana?

Can You Overdose on Marijuana?

Marijuana overdose? Is that even possible, dude? OD’s are definitely stuff stoners don’t like, especially if you are the one left to deal with said OD. But a lot of people often ask, can you overdose on weed man? Trust me, I’ve tried. You can’t. For real, and I can’t think of who said it first, but the only way some weed is going to kill you, is if a giant bail of it falls on your head. Or something similar. But then again, you don’t have to die in order for an overdose to have occurred. There are tons of people who have probably overdosed on cannabis and just not known it. Again, that goes back to how you define your terms. So let’s do that.

A site called Project Know (which I should mention is more than happy to sell you a place to get some help with that marijuana addiction), says that although marijuana overdoses are rare, it does happen. What does it look like? It’s going to be different for everyone, as most things involving marijuana experience are, but there’s a few symptoms you can keep an eye out for.

I also like how Urban Dictionary defines a marijuana overdose. Ahem
marijuana overdose

That is a fantastic point though, if you take too much, you could definitely experience some effects that we would classify as stuff stoners do not like at all. But that’s why we know to start small and work our way up, giving time for the effects to be felt, especially when dealing with edibles.

Overdose on edibles

People often ask the question, “Can you overdose on edibles?” You most absolutely can, but again, not in the same way as we think when we hear the words drug overdose. Edibles are generally considered more potent, because when you eat something with activated THC, not just THCA, your digestive system metabolizes that THC into another molecule called 11-hydroxy-thc. This is a completely different animal with a completely different set of properties in regards to how we experience the effects.

Know how much food you’ve eaten that day so you can gauge how hard the edible could hit you. Also, always keep in mind that the numbers as far as dosage is concerned on the label, don’t always accurately reflect what is actually inside the piece of whatever it happens to be you’re about to ingest.

Is it possible to overdose on marijuana?

Yep, you can overdose on anything if you put your mind to it. With the invention of netflix, people have been overdosing on data and bad tv shows and movies. But more importantly, let’s talk about an overdose on weed in comparison to something that can kill you if you take too much of it. Like alcohol for example.

You always hear that weed is safer than alcohol, well that’s absolutely true. How much alcohol does it take to die? Considering you can actually die from consuming too much alcohol, and the only thing that’s going to die if you take too much weed is a pizza, and maybe your coolness factor when all your friends realize you can’t hang. But all that aside, these overdoses have completely different outcomes. One is a shitty death lying in one’s own vomit, the other is waking up still feeling stoned.

Overdose on weed, really?

Sure, maybe you just ate an edible and didn’t feel it, so you ate another one, and now you feel like the smallest thing in the room and like everyone is staring at you, reading your most inner personal thoughts. In reality, your size didn’t change, and no one gives a shit about what your inner dialogue is chatting about. So if you start feeling like any of this is happening, just chill the fuck out, because thinking about it and dwelling on how bad you think it might be, is only going to make it worse, at least psychologically.

THC overdose

Of course with everyone running around hollering about dabbing this and dabbing that, the possibility of a dab overdose, or a THC overdose is always possible. But again, not in the same death by choking on vomit sort of way that other drugs can have. So can you overdose on dabs? Sure. You can overdose on air or water if you try hard enough.

Here’s the symptoms of an overdose on marijuana:

  • Rapid heart rate
  • Hallucinations
  • Mental confusion
  • Panic attacks
  • Extreme paranoia

It should also be noted that I’ve seen all of these symptoms present in people who are drug free. Sometimes people have brains that are all messed up and junk. Sometimes people get confused mentally, they get paranoid to the extreme level, panic sets in and before you know it, you’re on your way to the emergency room because let’s be honest, no one wants to be that guy or girl who was friends with someone that died because of something stupid they did while on some weed. No one should ever have to be that person.

How much does it take to overdose on weed?

Medline even goes so far as to not classify it as an overdose, but saying weed can cause some undesirable side effects, and those effects tend to increase in relation to the amount of weed one gets in their system.

These undesirable effects of marijuana can be:

  • Decreased short-term memory
  • Dry mouth
  • Impaired perception and motor skills
  • Red eyes

How much weed would it take to overdose?

If you keep going, you’ll maybe even manage to get enough in your system to exhibit the more serious effects of a cannabis overdose like panic, paranoia, or acute psychosis, but then they are sure to add that these may be more common with new users or in those who already have a psychiatric disease. That’s huge right there. Pot overdose can be no joke, especially if that person is already an annoying individual to begin with.

Furthermore, if you already have some messed up shit going on in your brain, maybe take it extra easy with weed until you know how it’s going to make you react. Know thyself, this is key. Then you’ll know how much weed will kill you.

Can you OD on marijuana, final thoughts

Is it possible to overdose on weed? Yes. Can you overdose on THC? Absolutely. Can you die from marijuana? Nope. Not in the typical overdose sort of way. But just like if a 120 pound bail of hay fell on you, it could definitely fuck up your day. Same with weed. Or feathers. Or water. Moderation is key. How much marijuana does it take to overdose? Well that all depends on the person, and the quality of the marijuana. If your cannabis has a bunch of nasty shit in there as far as heavy metals or pesticides, then you start talking about a whole other set of variables that come into play. Is it a weed overdose, or an arsenic overdose at that point? How much weed do you have to smoke to die? That all depends on what’s in your weed. How much weed does it take to kill you, or how much weed can kill you? I’d say about 120 pounds depending on where it hits you.
