Stoners like stoner movies
Why are stoner movies stuff stoners like? It’s obvious, man. If it isn’t you should probably smoke some more pot. Anyhow stoner movies are practically turning into their own real genre. Oh wait. According to Wikipedia it already is: Stoner film is a subgenre of comedy films that revolve around the use of cannabis.[1] Typically, such movies show cannabis use in a comic and positive fashion. Generally, cannabis use is one of the main themes, and inspires much of the plot. They are often representative of cannabis culture.
Anyhow stoner movies, and movies about weed like documentaries for that matter, are best enjoyed when stoned of course. Seems like there are so many stoner movies on netflix that there should be a “good stoners movies” list on their site, man.
So instead of putting together a list of the best stoner movies or the best movies to watch high ourselves is a risky endeavor. What we think are the best movies to watch when high might not make it to your list of best stoner movies. So that’s why we took this all-too important question to streets, man. We’re too stoned and far too unskilled to come up with our own top 10 stoner movies, we’re rather let social media do the work.
Here are the 10 best stoner movies according to our Twitter and FB pages with commentary from us of course…
- Up in Smoke
Element #87 on the Periodic Table of Stuff Stoners Like Cheech & Chong’s first feature film is probably one of the best weed movies ever. They were a comedy duo working their chops for years before they reworked some of their best material for this stoner movie classic. The film also stars Stacy Keach’s as iconic Sgt. Stedenko and Tom Skerritt’s who plays the PTSD-ridden Vietnam veteran, Strawberry. The movie surprised critics and earned millions leading to a series of classic Cheech & Chong stoner movies. - Half Baked
This is one of the stoner movies that’s actually mentioned on the on the Periodic Table of Stuff Stoners Like itself. And it’s one of those marijuana movies that everyone had a cameo in—Jon Stewart, Steven Wright, Stephen Baldwin, Bob Saget, Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson, Tommy Chong and of course the legendary Dave Chappelle, element #92 on the Periodic Table of Stuff Stoners Like. Apparently Chappelle complained about the ending of this classic. His character gives up weed to win back his girlfriend Mary Jane. Chappelle said that the studio re-writes turned Half Baked into “a pot movie for kids.” Pot movies for kids? Aren’t those called cartoons? - Dazed & Confused
Dazed and Confused, number #55 on on the Periodic Table of Stuff Stoners Like is the quintessential movie about smoking weed in the ‘70s. Smoking while watching movies like dazed and confused feels almost like smoking among friends. It’s kinda of like coming of age flick about stoners. The film was a career-maker for Matthew McConaughey as who’s chacter offers sage advice about high school girls’: I get older, but they stay the same age.” This seminal stoner movie also featured Rory Cochrane as super-stoner Ron Slater whose weed-induced insights on shit like the hipness of Martha Washington were “high” points of the movie. “Behind every good man there is a woman, and that woman was Martha Washington, man, and everyday George would come home, she would have a big fat bowl waiting for him, man, when he come in the door, man, she was a hip, hip, hip lady, man.” - The Big Lebowski
One of the best weed movies ever is this Coen Brothers classic, element #88 on the Periodic Table of Stuff Stoners Like. A far as funny stoner movies go this one features an awesome performance by Jeff Bridges as Dude—a stoner legend, man. Why? Beacase “The Dude Always Abides” and seems to always be stoned. If you’re stoned and looking for funny stoner movies, put on your sloppiest clothes, grab your bowling ball and do not miss this one, dude. - Pineapple Express
If you like hell of violent and hell of silly marijuana movies you’ll probably dig Pineapple Express featuring the pot-smoking Seth Rogen and James Franco. Seems like these dudes show up in all the stoner comedies. Anyhow it’s one of those pot movies that you can put on and then trip out on how crazy shit gets—definitely one of the best movies to watch when high. It all starts when Rogen’s stoner character witnesses a drug-related execution. Of course he drops a roach of Pineapple Express and the murderers find it and craziness ensues. According to producer Judd Apatow, the inspiration for Pineapple Express was Brad Pitt’s stoner character, Floyd, in True Romance. “I thought it would be funny to make a movie in which you follow that character out of his apartment and watch him get chased by bad guys,” Apatow told Entertainment Weekly. - How High
This popular weed movie stars Method Man and Redman in a sorta street kids go to Harvard meets stoner movie mash-up. After Silas and his friend Jamal lose their best friend to a disquieting pot-related dreadlock fire, they grow a magical marijuana plant from his ashes. Of course the resulting weed bestows them with all the knowledge they need to make it in the high-stakes academic world. Until their weed stash runs out of course. - Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle
This is probably one of the best stoner comedies about getting the munchies ever. The two main stoner characters, investment banker John Cho (Harold) and prospective doctor Kal Penn (Kumar), decide to munch out at White Castle after getting high, but when they can’t find their car and craziness ensues. No wait. They can’t find the restaurant and craziness ensues. Sorry about that, we got the plot mixed up with the director Danny Leiner’s other stoner classic Dude, Where’s My Car?. - Friday
Friday is one of the most classic stoner movies ever. This is one of the best movies to watch high because it features Ice Cube and Chris Tucker plus it’s funny as hell. It all starts on a Friday when Cube’s character, a pot newbie who was recently fired from his job, decides to throw caution and puffs of indo to wind and smoke some weed with his best bud Smokey. Everything would be awesome, if Smokey wasn’t supposed to be getting high off his own supply. Somehow his dealer finds out that Cube’s character smoked up the weed, has no money and craziness ensues. Unlike half-baked where Chappelle’s character stops smoking weed at the end of the film, this one ends as Smokey announces he’s going into rehab— looks up, lights a joint and shouts, “I was just bullshittin’! And you know this… man!” - Reefer Madness
This is one of those stoner movies that so bad it’s almost good. It so bad because it’s poorly written, poorly acted and completely filled with ridiculous stupidity. That’s one of the reasons why it’s one of the best movies to watch high. However some people blame this sensationalistic weed movie for the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act, the first national anti-cannabis law in the United States, a year after its release in 1936. - Humboldt County
One of the best stoner movies on netflix is Humboldt County even though it got mixed reviews it’s still among the top stoner movies of all time. Why? Not only does it take place in Northern California’s Emerald Triangle is features popular cannabis activist Fairuza Balk as “Bogart.” You’ve probably seen her at benefits for the Marijuana Policy Project and cannabis good organizations.
