Trump to Ignore Medical Marijuana, Declare Opioid Epidemic a Public Health Emergency

Hero Trump OpioidPresident Donald Trump is expected to downplay the nation’s opioid crisis by calling it a public health emergency and continue to ignore marijuana as a solution to the epidemic.

Our least-favorite weed-hating Governor Chris Christie has stated that President Donald Trump is likely to declare a much needed executive action today addressing the opioid epidemic. And the mention of marijuana being an alternative to treat pain and ease the opioid crisis is nowhere to be found of course. On Wednesday Christie told Bloomberg News; “I believe he’s going to do it, and I think tomorrow you’re going to hear the real specifics on what a Trump administration is going to do to start to move this back.”

Adding to the bullshit he stated, “He cares about it, and I think the actions you’re going to see him take in the next few days are going to make it very clear how much he cares about this issue and what he’s willing to devote to it.”

Okay, let’s wait and see how President Trump makes it so crystal clear about “how much he cares about this issue”. Many are anxious and somewhat desperate to hear his resolution to a growing epidemic that is beyond crisis and will kill 91 people today.

Optimism is needed knowing on August 10, the president told reporters outside his Trump National golf club in Bedminster that he considered the surge in opioid-driven deaths a national emergency. Two days earlier, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price said that no such declaration was necessary.

“The opioid crisis is an emergency, and I’m saying officially right now it is an emergency. It’s a national emergency. We’re going to spend a lot of time, a lot of effort and a lot of money on the opioid crisis.”

Trump said the above in August and received Christie’s Commission recommendation to “declare a national emergency” in June. For whatever reason, (big pharma) Trump has continued to delay declaring a national emergency.

We can all hope the man does something good for the people who voted for his shady ass. Before boarding Marine One on the south lawn of the White House today he alluded to a “big meeting” tomorrow.

“We’re going to have a big meeting on opioids tomorrow. We’re going to be doing a very, very important meeting sometime in the very short — the very near future on opioids, in terms of declaring a national emergency, which gives us power to do things that you can’t do right now.”

Declaring a national emergency would allow the president to access money from the same pool that funds agencies like FEMA, and permits him to move dollars from various departments to more flexibly adapt the federal response. Downplaying the crisis by calling it a Public Health Emergency does not allow such monetary transactions—effectively sweeping the crisis back under the rug again.

How likely is he to reference marijuana? Do you think he listened to the Jeff Sessions hearing last week and do you think he heard Orrin Hatch’s question about the “substance which is often offered as a substitute for opioids”? Something tells me the “substance which is often offered as a substitute for opioids” will be absent from the president’s pending declaration. And, unfortunately will most likely also be absent from the final report from Chris Christie’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis. The final report from Governor Chrisite is due on Halloween.
