With legalization spreading across the nation like wildfire is it possible that we’ve reached the end of drug testing for weed? Well one indication may be that one of the largest employers around, Amazon, announced last summer that it would no longer drug test its employees for weed. They also reinstated job eligibility for former employees and job candidates who were fired because they failed a drug test for weed.
“We made these changes for a few reasons. First, we recognized that an increasing number of states are moving to some level of cannabis legalization – making it difficult to implement an equitable, consistent, and national pre-employment marijuana testing program.”
“Second, publicly available national data indicates that pre-employment marijuana testing disproportionately impacts people of color and acts as a barrier to employment. And third, Amazon’s pace of growth means that we are always looking to hire great new team members, and we’ve found that eliminating pre-employment testing for cannabis allows us to expand our applicant pool.”
California tech companies including Microsoft, Google and Apple also ended their hate one employee pot use, abandoning drug screening for weed. One of the main drivers of this trend isn’t just legalization. It’s the fact that companies can’t find enough workers because they’re being screened out as a result of failing a drug test for weed. So ditchihg the drug trest should help attract more candidates, fill more roles, and allow more people to keep their jobs.
Another reason for ending the practice is because it unfairly targets people of color and low-income communities.
“Pre-employment marijuana testing has disproportionately affected communities of color by stalling job placement and, by extension, economic growth,” Amazon has stated. “We believe this inequitable treatment is unacceptable.”

Most of all drug-testing feels like a violation of privacy. It also feels gross. Because who likes to piss in a cup just to prove that they’re worthy? Nobody. Plus drug testing doesn’t show impairment. Someone could have smoked a joint at a party on a Friday night and then fail a drug test for weed on Monday morning. How unfair is that?
