The UK’s Daily Mail is reporting a weed angle to the tragic Ghost Ship fire here in Oakland California that claimed the lives of 36 people and counting possibly. As long-time residents of Oakland and members of the art-scene we are absolutely crushed by these events and send our heartfelt condolences to everyone who has been impacted by this devastating event.

Often times in the reporting of tragic events marijuana seems to be mentioned as some sort of scapegoat. So we’d like to understand more about the Daily Mail’s claim over the weekend. In a salacious and damning post titled; EXCLUSIVE: Self-styled ‘love child of Manson, Pol Pot and Hitler’ who ran site of Oakland rave inferno was heavy drug user who held sex parties and should ‘be in prison’ says father-in-law the Daily Mail have captioned a photo with: “Inside the deathtrap: This was just one corner of the warehouse. Some of the items appear to come from Bali, where Almena and his wife were said to have gone on the proceeds from growing mairjuana.” Below you can see the photo and the caption in the screenshot taken from the Daily Mail’s site.

Derick Ion Almena Micah Allison Ghostship Oakland FireWe’ve searched online to see if other media have substantiated the claim that Derick Ion Almena and or his wife Micah Allison were involved in growing marijuana. And have found nothing. We’re not expert reporters by any stretch of the imagination, but so far the Daily Mail are the only media outlet that we’ve found mentioning marijuana, Ghost Ship and Derick Ion Almena in the same story.

However we have heard through the local Oakland art scene that this could be true. We’ve seen many many grows in many many Oakland warehouses like the Ghost Ship, but have never heard of one inside the Ghost Ship.
