Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome is Stuff Stoners Don’t Like

Gorilla Glue #4Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome sucks

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome is a rare form of cannabinoid toxicity that develops in some major stoners aka chronic chronic smokers and it totally sucks, dude. It’s often mistakenly called Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome because it involves cyclic episodes of debilitating nausea and vomiting.

People who suffer from the syndrome often find symptoms stop after they stop smoking weed altogether. According to Wikipedia some people who suffer from cannabis hyperemesis syndrome find that hot showers relieve their symptoms. From a 2005 report, “hot bathing may act by correcting the cannabis induced disequilibrium of the thermoregulatory system of the hypothalamus.”

Hyperemesis definition

Before we dive into this bizarre condition let’s define hyperemesis. Basically hyperemesis is severe or prolonged vomiting. Pregnant women often suffer from hyperemesis. It could lead to weight loss and dehydration.

Cyclical vomiting syndrome

The symptoms of Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome are very similar to Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, however it is not caused by cannabis consumption. And we suspect that consuming cannabis could help—but we’re stoners not doctors.

Luckily cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome is very rare. We’ve never come across anyone who’s actually had it or anyone who’s known someone who suffered from it. And it’s not like the recent rise in cannabis concentrate consumption aka dabbing has created cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome because it’s been around for a long time, first reported in the Adelaide Hills of South Australia in 2004. The study focused on ten regular marijuana smokers suffering from cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome. A few years later a larger study was conducted focusing on 98 smokers with cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome confirming the earlier reported findings.

In a 2005 case report review of Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome treatment from Philadelphia, PA reveals that  the average duration of cannabis use before the onset of symptoms was around 16 years, and the earliest symptoms had developed in a patient was after around three years of smoking weed. They concluded that cannabis hyperemesis syndrome develops in heavy, longtime consumers of cannabis who smoke more than three to five times a day for many years before the appearance of symptoms.

Because smoking weed typically alleviates nausea people who suffer from cannabis hyperemesis syndrome usually increase the amount of cannabis they consume hoping it’ll help settle their stomachs to no avail. In fact it only makes nausea worse—which only proves we don’t know enough about the interaction between cannabis and cannabinoid receptors.

Anyhow Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome is rare and shouldn’t make anyone nervous about smoking weed or discourage anyone from continuing to consume cannabis if it works for them. Plus it’s easily cured by stopping the consumption of cannabis.

Hey! I’m one of the unfortunate bastards with this syndrome. I just had my 5th episode in about 2.5 years.. It seems to flare up about every 6 months with zero signs before its onset. I will wake up in the morning and start barfing.. And continue barfing every 20-45 minutes for 22-29 hours straight. (That’s 2-3 times per hour!!!) I went to the hospital the first 4 times and on the 4th time this young female doctor diagnosed me with this and I was so baffled… What does me smoking weed have to do with me puking my guts out??
I’m a 29 yr old white female – this started happening at 26 and I’ve been a daily smoker since 17.
After my diagnosis I read up on the internet that some people said it was from hash and oils and dabs and that shit so I cut all of that out… Buds only, I wouldn’t even sprinkle keef on top of my bong hits, man….. Still, 6 months later and I’m spuuing.
I don’t have the need to take hot baths and showers but my husband encouraged me to take baths during this last episode and it made me a tad more comfortable but did not eleaviate my symptoms.

I was recently released from the hospital for throwing up 6-12 times an hour. I vomited so much, blood started showing up. I just recently started using dabs and once I did that’s all I did. I quit smoking the flower all together. About a week and a half. Before this hospital stay, I had two episodes where I woke up puking, but only for about 15 minutes and then I was good. This last time, I kind of knew before I went to sleep, that something was wrong. I was bloated and I had acid reflux. My symptoms are very similar to CHS but also to CVS (Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome). Being that i live in NY, not many people know what the hell I am talking about. I know I smoke a lot more than your common user(about a quarter of flowers a day), but why now? Is it the dabs? Or THC all together? I was released from the hospital yesterday and I just hit a blunt a few times a couple minutes ago. Wish me luck! I really don’t know how I can go on without maryjane, but if weed is truly the cause for my condition, then maybe I have too.

I have it. I am 2 weeks sober and still have it bad, actually a lot worse because I’m not smoking to help the symptoms. I’ve been smoking for 20 years. Nobody could figure this out, I’ve lost 60 pounds… have had scopes, biopsies, ER IV hydration, ultrasounds, every blood test known to man and then I tell my gastroenterologist I smoke weed and that he has to figure out my hyperemesis or I’m going to die…I had severe hyperemesis when I was pregnant so I knew what it was. Anyways this is when he tells me about hyperemesis cannabinoid syndrome. I am on Zofran just to try to get a sip of water down a day, this is pure hell I literally live in my bathtub. I throw up bile a hundred times a day. The ER so they can’t do anything for me. I am so desperate and the thought that I might die certainly crossed my mind, I looked online, you can only go 21 days without eating then I’m definitely there. Will never touch it again.

I have it ✋Worst thing ever cuz I’m an all day every day stoner. 2 years ago I was hospitalized for 12 days because I was unable to keep down food or water and I was literally living in the shower. I was puking constantly, to the point where there was blood. During those 12 days they did ever GI test they could think of and everything was normal. I even ended up having surgery to take my gallbladder out because they thought I had biliary dyskinesia. The only abnormality was that I always have a low potassium level due to the dehydration from all the vomiting. It also causes me cramping and abdominal pain. I can’t eat because once my body starts to digest it my entire abdomen clenches into a giant knot and stays that way, with the only relief coming from hot baths and showers. Sometimes ones as long as 25 hours long. I stopped smoking and after a few months everything went back to normal. All symptoms were gone. But I was miserable. My depression and anxiety were at an all time high, I was suicidal, I wasn’t sleeping, it was miserable. So now I’m a stoner again. Luckily for me my husband works and I stay home so I have the option to just spend my day smoking and relaxing in a hot bath. Every now and then when I’m really good and stoned I’ll get out of the bath for a while and watch a movie or something, but once I start to come down I start getting sick again and have to go get back in the bath and smoke. The problem really arises when we can’t get and concentrates or bud. Then the shower and Xanax are the only thing that get me by. And if I go too long without smoking I have to go to the hospital due to dehydration and pain. Most people would just quit all together but I’d rather be a soggy stoner than miserable, suicidal, and having panic attacks 3 times a day!

I suffer from cannabanoid hyperemisis. About three years ago I entered a new relationship and as I have social anxiety I smoked every time I was going to hang out with him, or anyone for that matter. Since I live at home and smoked mainly on the road, I went from smoking flowers and concentrates five days a week to strictly concentrates/edibles. Around this tim I started getting violently ill. Throwing up several times an hour, in and out of hospitals and basically had all the symptoms the other people in the comments described. I lost twenty pounds in less than one week becaus I simply didn’t eat anything. A gastroenterologist had suggested I had CHS but I was like, pfffffft whatever. Just another ploy to give weed a bad name, I thought. I am twenty seven and have smoked almost daily for about eight years. I’m on of the few unfortunate souls that was truly (habitually) addicted to marijuana. I have OCD and I felt I had to smoke every time I got the chance. I fantasized about quitting because I was spending upwards of four hundred dollars a month on concentrates. I never quit because I couldn’t. Then the last time I got so sick, I was like, nothing is worth this pain. That was almost two months ago and I have not ever gone this long without smoking. I haven’t gotten sick since then, so unfortunately I’m pretty sure this is what I have. I want to try smoking once or twice a month, but I can’t find any information about whether I will get sick again or not. So as of right now it just is not worth it, between getting sick and becoming addicted again.
